Which type of lamp do you need?
The right type of lamp depends on three things: whether it will be used indoors or outdoors, whether there is a socket nearby, and if you want a lamp with a built-in light source or one that takes a bulb. Here is an overview of the lamp types we make and what each one is good at.
Indoor lamps
Lamps for dry rooms such as the living room, bedroom and home office are usually connected to the mains. The lamps in the Expo series are IP20 rated, which means they are made for indoor use. They have a recessed light source that gives glare-free light. See all indoor lamps.
Outdoor lamps and IP ratings
An outdoor lamp must handle rain, dust and frost. The IP rating tells you how well a lamp is protected: the first digit covers dust and the second covers water. Ambience Lamp Intelligent+ and the Light lamps are IP67 rated, so they are dustproof and waterproof and withstand temperatures down to -20 °C. See all outdoor lamps.
Rechargeable and cordless lamps
A rechargeable lamp runs on a built-in battery and can stand wherever you want the light. Battery life and brightness are the two things to compare. Ambience Lamp Intelligent+ gives 120 lumens, Light 155 gives 180 lumens and Light 250 gives 245 lumens. At 50% brightness, Light 250 lasts over 30 hours. That is enough for mood lighting and reading close to the lamp, but not for lighting a whole room. See all rechargeable lamps and portable lamps.
LED lamps and bulbs
Some lamps have a built-in LED, while others take a bulb you can replace. Expo 185 and Expo 120 have a built-in LED strip that gives 2700 K light. Expo Ceiling, Wall, Table, Pendant and Floor take a GU10 bulb, and Bulb GU10 uses 2.5 watts and replaces a 35-watt incandescent bulb. Dawn takes an E27 bulb such as Bulb 6W E27. Ceiling, wall, floor and table lamps
Lamps can also be sorted by where they are placed. Ceiling lamps give general light, wall lamps and table lamps give light where you sit, and floor lamps light up corners. You will find our whole range under lamps.
FAQ – Frequently asked questions
What does IP67 mean?
The first digit, 6, means the lamp is dustproof. The second digit, 7, means it can handle being briefly submerged in water. Ambience Lamp Intelligent+ and the Light lamps are IP67 rated.
What is the difference between a cordless and a rechargeable lamp?
In practice, nothing. Both run on a built-in battery that you recharge. See our wireless lamps and rechargeable lamps.
Is a rechargeable lamp bright enough to read by?
Close to the lamp, yes. With 120–245 lumens, our rechargeable lamps are best for mood lighting and reading close by. For a desk, choose a lamp with a cable, see desk lamps.
Can an indoor lamp be used outdoors?
Not if it is IP20 rated like the Expo lamps, as it is not protected against water. Choose an IP67 lamp from the Light series instead.
Are LED bulbs dimmable?
It depends on the lamp. Bulb GU10 can be dimmed in a lamp with a dimmer, but not in the Expo lamps. Expo 185 and Expo 120 are dimmed with their foot pedal.
